I used a windows 10 PE boot cd running a live windows environment and followed the previously posted tutorial to update my Mars successfully.

Also, yes you will need to copy any books you have , apps, etc. it will erase the Mars when you do the Android 8 update (like a new device).

I did like the upgrade though. It is much more responsive.
