Almost.
The vast majority of books I bought were second hand mmpbs which were roughly the same size. Very occasionally I would buy a trade paperback of a title I wanted as I had not yet found a mmpb copy. When I found a second hand mmpb of that title I would buy it and trade in the trade paperback at my usual paperback exchange for a different mmpb.
Until recently paperback exchange shops/stalls were common in the UK. They sold second hand paperbacks and once the buyer had read them they could trade them in at the exchange them against some other paperbacks. They would usually credit you with half what you paid for the books if you had nor damaged them.
