After a lot of discussions, I finally got the definitive answer from Apple. It's expected behavior. They dropped support for Categories with CarPlay. Apparently, the design engineers didn't get around to documenting the change. It just means that I'll be using the Audible app in Car Play from now on and hope they don't make a similar change.

My guess is that the vast majority of CarPlay users only have a couple of books downloaded onto their phone at a time, so it's not really an issue for them.
