This has nothing to do with reading lists as such, but if you set Mark newly added books then… viz:

Then show and select all marked books and add them to the default reading list. For me that would be Ctrl+Shift+M and Ctrl+Shift+R - but they maybe custom shortcuts.

The Marks will disappear if you clear them, exit calibre or switch libraries.
