Yes, your best path could be to register your wife's kindle, but she or you might need to deregister it first. You might want to make a note of the serial number in her amazon.com My Contents and Devices page. You might then be able to register it in your My Contents and Devices page (I don't know for sure). If so, you won't even have to turn the kindle on or connect to wifi.
Once registered to your account that has the book, you can download for transfer over USB and take the usual steps to liberate it.
Worst case, you can copy or download the book to the kindle and read it on that.
