You may want to try connecting a USB 2.0 hub to your Mac and then connecting the Kobo to the hub. One acquaintance is doing this using a USB-C to USB-A adapter which he then plugs his old USB 2.0 hub into. Not sure if this USB-C to USB-A adapter from Amazon CA is the exact one he is using but looks close.
