Thanks for all the replies. My current setup is a ThinkPad 530 that is 6 or 7 years old, running Ubuntu 20.04 and an HP chromebook. I used to dual boot windows 7 and it was a PITA because of all the necessary updates and crap windows would do to entice me to upgrade to Windows 10. I ended up wiping and installing Ubuntu and am happy with that.
None of the solutions offered are easy or inexpensive. I'm amazed at how difficult it is to buy an ebook and read it without having to turn to Amazon/Kindle and their proprietary app. I could spend a long time ranting about DRM and proprietary ecosystems, but I suppose everyone on this site feels the same way. I think the industry has 'legalized' itself out of a lot of revenue.
