If the document is an epub, pdf, zip of html, and possibly others (markdown?) it is possible to designate an author directly in the document.
If the document contains no author, you can also set up a filename template that extracts metadata from the filename. Default is title, and maybe author. I know I modified mine to include author. (But if the book has metadata, it'll override what the template finds.)
