Overdrive in Kobo — new behavior?

I borrowed a book from the library recently, downloaded the ascm file to my computer, moved that to my Tolino Shine 2 and then it downloaded the book from wherever they come from. (I guess an Adobe server somewhere.)

I then went to my Aura Edition 2 to see if I could still download the book there (which I've been able to do in the past). But I didn't have to specifically download it, it was already displayed in the "My Books" section. I didn't do a thing to get it. I don't remember that happening in the past. So, then, to test further, I synced my Aura HD — and it automatically downloaded to "My Books" section there as well, without going into the store.

Now further testing shows that I don't even have to download the ascm at all, once I borrow the book it automatically downloads to my Kobos (I assume I have to first sync the Aura Edition 2). That means the choice to read on the Kindle remains — and testing this, I can confirm that I can download the same book both to the Kobos and to the Kindles. Is this now the norm? Has it always been and I was just too dense to realize it?
