The good thing about the backup is that you do have a local option, which means you can backup locally and then copy that zip file to Google drive or wherever you like. When I upgraded devices I just backed up to a local zip on my old Note and uploaded the backup to the new one, then restored. Worked just fine. (I have this problem with other software on my phone not being able to backup to cloud and this works around that.)

Care to share what the error is? that might give us some clues where to look? You might well want to attempt the backup when the internet is 'off peak' in your part of the world..
