Your situation is the perfect example that illustrates why DRM is bad. You are the poster child for removing DRM. I would not hesitate a microsecond.
Google "apprentice alf" to get started. You will need Calibre (fantastic, and free, software). Everybody who has eBooks needs Calibre. But you don't want the latest version quite yet (due to incompatibility with Apprentice Alf's tools).
