As long the usage is consistent, I don't care if they use single quotes, double quotes, guillemets or whatever else works.
And if we get rid of single quotes, what do we use to signify an embedded quote?
My dad said “Franklin D. Roosevelt opened his first inaugural address with the chilling words: “The only thing we have to fear is fear itself.””

Perhaps a contest to generate the quotes version of the eats shoots and leaves sentence?
