When you first use a 'new' Kindle with calibre, you have to enter that kindle in the tools area - I thought it was somewhere in the plugins, you enter the serial number of the kindle. Please, someone, refresh my memory??? I have 3 'new to me' kindles and I don't remember how to register them in the Calibre application.
You don't register them in Calibre. Either Calibre knows bout your model Kindle or it doesn't. But if you are using an older Calibre, you might have to upgrade it so it knows about your Kindles. I know the current version of Calibre knows about all Kindles.

What version Calibre and what OS are you using?
