I'm thinking this is likely because of their new streaming service. Downloading books purchased with membership credits is one thing, but perhaps they're worried on downloading and keeping unlimited streaming books. I run into this with Scribd - the titles download to the account to use, but not somewhere to be converted outside the app/website. That isn't an issue for me with Scribd and audio since I use phones and my Echo Show to listen, but it is an annoyance with e-books since I have to only use my Fire to read rented Scribd books, and I hate reading on my fire.
