Whereas when I restore the backup image I took before I loaded the factory image, the device shows a white screen, 3 animated dots appear and then the screen goes black again and nothing happens. The same happens when I try the reset button: powers on, 3 dots, then black screen and nothing after that.
If the image was written to the card correctly, it should work. I would suggest using a new card just in case the old one is failing. You can safely use a larger card and expand the book storage later. Of course, the image only works for a Glo HD. If you have something else, you need a different image.

Have you actually tried a factory reset? The reset button doesn't do this. All it does is restart a device that has hung. The various methods of doing a factory reset for the Glo HD are on https://wiki.mobileread.com/wiki/Kobo_Reset:_Glo_HD. You want to use the last method.
