Alas, it turns out that I was unobservant. I was actually using the Audible app rather than the Books app. The carplay version of the Books app still doesn't have categories or anything. Just recently listened to. Obviously a bug.

On the other hand, the Audible version works quite well. I do have to download the various audiobooks before listening, but I can do that. I had created a duplicate up next category in Audible and had downloaded all the books in the category.
