I have a laptop with that same issue (a shallow SD card slot) and I use a low-profile mini SD card adapter, which takes a mini-SD card and lets it fit into the regular SD card slot, but barely protrudes at all. It's actually a little bit hard to get it out of my laptop. I liked doing it this way, using the SD card slot, since it preserves the USB slots for other things. The one I bought from Amazon a couple of years ago iisn't available anymore, but if you search "low-profile mini SD adapter", or "shortening mini SD adapter" there are multiple choices.

I do have to be careful with the one I use in my car - I've almost lost it once or twice during the course of updating the audio content on it.
