Be careful. Lots of reports of bricked devices over at XDADEVS. Most android devices have that switch in dev options but it rarely does anything, stupidly.
This thread talks about installing Magisk without even talking about unlocking the bootloader... but we need root to unlock the bootloader:

I was able to get the firmware from some site, Russian IIRC, including the boot.img. So the only thing stopping Magisk seems to be unlocking the boot loader? Oddly enough, I have seen a toggle under developers settings with text like ~~allow oem bootloader unlocking~~. However, I get a _command unknown_ in fastboot whenever I try to unlock the bootloader. Haven’t looked into it much further, though.
I’ve been getting my apk’s from apkpure, apkmonk, etc., etc. Does anyone know whether such sites mess up the phone?
