If your tags are a mess, especially from imported books, I'd suggest ignoring the default tags column (mostly) and make a new custom one. Then in the new custom tags column, you can carefully populate it, possibly by doing searches on the default tags column and then using bulk edit to add the custom tags.
I suggest you clean the tags column as you load books to your library. Then you can use the tags column.
