Ahhh, the 7th anniversary necropost revival to this thread!
One would hope that deregistering would not wipe out content not owned by the entity you are deregistering from. However, this is Amazon we're dealing with, so all bets are off. I wouldn't poke the gorilla, even if others have done it before and survived. Backup everything first if you hope to keep any of it - that's reasonable advice for any device or computer.
