Thumbs down Kindle Paperwhite (PW4) - broken gummy water-resistant covering

Last week I took a closer look than usual at my year-old Kindle, and noticed a sizable hole (~2 cm) in the gummy material on one of the corners. A smooth plasticky surface is visible underneath. The gummy material is also incredibly thin (like thin writing paper) and it looks like it contracted to increase the size of the hole. I patched it up with clear packing tape which looks a little ugly but now I'm afraid to peel it off for fear of making the hole larger. The gum is also uneven and scuffed in places on the edges where it touches the stand.

I don't know what could've caused that hole. I expected that the material would be crap, so if I stick it in my pocket, it's only in a soft fabric jacket like fleece. I didn't carry it in my jeans or anything of the sort. The stand I use doesn't touch corners, only the edges.

I haven't ever dropped it in the water so far, but there definitely won't be any more reading in the bath...
