Years ago I used to bypass Dick Francis because, hey, I have zero interest in horse racing. Then one day I saw the paperback of Reflex, with a damaged camera on the cover. Well, I've been pressing the button on the box for more than 60 years, since my first box brownie; so I bought that book. I liked it enough to buy another. And another.... until eventually I was buying hardbacks as soon as they appeared.

I still have zero interest in horse racing, but I know a lot more about it.

I used to see Terry Pratchett's Discworld series everywhere, until one day, visiting London from Oz, I got bored, went to W H Smith and saw, I think, "Pyramids", bought it; and ultimately finished up with all the Pratchett adult books. No idea why I resisted them for years.

Much the same pattern for most series I've bought. Impulse for starters.
