I wanted to add a few.
  • If you haven't read the Callahan series, by Spider Robinson and you like books that are a bit out there, a bit offbeat, a little sci-fi with a little fantasy thrown in, and you secretly believe that Nikky Tesla is still out there, travelling the universe--and you know who Pixel is, this series is for you.
  • Lilian Jackson Braun's "The Cat Who..." series. Sweet and definitely cozy and definitely for CAT lovers. If you hate cats, don't and if you're looking for Spenser-like action-adventure, nope.
  • The VI Warshawski series, from Sara Paretsky.
  • Has nobody mentioned the Dragonriders of Pern dynasty? Not mentally taxing, agreed, but definitely as addictive as potato chips, if you like that sort of thing. (n.b.: stick with those written by Herself, not add-ons. Like Dune.)
  • Ed McBain's 87th Precinct series--did someone else already mention this?
  • and of course, pretty much any of Simon Green's series. Fantasy-meets-sci-fi in some of them; his oldest is the infamous Deathstalkers, my personal fave are the Nightsides; the Ishmael Jones series is still alive; and I rather liked the Secret Histories. I loved the idea of Shadows Fall and hated the standalone novel. My one complaint with Simon Green is that his series endings are all sucky bummers, by and large. If you're looking to binge, this guy is DEFINITELY bingeable. Start with Deathstalker or even his Hawk and Fishers and work your way through, although, the Deathstalkers and Hawk/Fishers are sort of odd, compared to the others, in terms of the overall settings, themes and so on. It's hard to explain. Keep your eyes peeled for Sea Goat and The Bear--in pretty much every series.
