You are mistaken that people that like calibre don't care about it's quality.

But, you do have to understand that converting from PDF is probably not something most people are doing. Also, Kovid is one person and can only do so much. Ultimately it is he that decides what is important to him and what he works on. Of course, he works on those things that he finds important.

Also, this is a freely provided program that no one asked you to pay for. I think you should leave your feelings of entitlement at the door.

Finally, being that it is an open source program you are more than welcome to improve it any way you see fit, and give back. Kovid has accepted may patches for people that were able to add features which those contributors thought important but were low on Kovid's priority list.

If other tools work better for you, then by all means use them. I don't think any calibre "fanboys" will think any less of you. Well, I know I won't. Although I don't consider myself a "fanboy" given the negative connotations that term implies.
