Device View: Why do covers sometimes appear in the wrong colours?

In Calibre, sometimes viewing books in the details pane of the device view show their covers with what looks like reversed RGB values. It happens on both sideloaded and non-sideloaded books, but not all of them.

Copying the covers to a test book or image editor retain the wrong colours. Since my device is eInk I'm not sure if the wrong colours are retained there.

Is this supposed to happen?
