My first thought on hearing that it works only plugged in is the battery needs replacing. Mini is a pretty old device and the batteries don't usually last that long.

The mini is very easy to replace batteries - it has screws. The back cover was designed to be replaceable.

I have a mini that is still going good but I don't use it much and I leave it powered off with 40-50% charge. That is the best for battery life.
