Suppose buying old kindles I take a chance they will fail. But obviously doesnt matter then lol

If you really want to read on an eink Kindle, then you had better buy one of the current models. Really old Kindles are good for deDRM purposes, but not for active use.
Amazon doesn't really care whether you use your Kindles or not. My two oldest Kindles have been sitting on the shelf for years. Probably there are tens of thousands of old models doing the same out there. And even the Kindles I use for reading are in the airplane mode 99% of the time (I sideload all my books from Calibre).
