YOU (or your security suite) did something to a large group of files (books)

I every time I read here that folk do blanket Metadata update or other operations ON A WORKING set of books.
I suspect you used a older (private) Plugin that had a bug (or could not deal with a now malformed OPF) and left a mess.

(I know, I have had to fix (seriously edit) a few older titles (My Calibre Library was started a decade ago.) where something like this happened. I have no clue WHEN or WHAT, did it as I know they used to be good because I see tell tales of my edits)

It took me years to massage my initial load (I added 'empty books' for my entire SF and Fantasy, Library). ANY Metadata update on those is now on a PER BOOK basis. The only Bulkish update I do , is Tags (trim and consolidate) .

FWIW V5.x has not done any harm to anything I have worked on. Not worked in some cases, but NEVER HARMED.
