I had to read (and Memorize parts of) the Beowulf saga in the original Old English when I was in High school. Shakespeare was easy after that. It also gave me a much better understanding of the evolution of language. It definitely didn't make me want to stop reading...Ethan Frome and The Red Badge of Courage did that. (they didn't make me want to stop reading all together, but they did make me want to stop reading those two books!)
