FWIW: I occasionally access some of the libraries I use with installed version 5.x. with version 2.85.1 (server) and 3.48 (EPUB viewer) for the purposes indicated.

I don't use the ePub Annotation feature in 5, but the fact that new tables are there doesn't seem to stop versions 2 and 3 doing what I want. Some plugins add tables to the database schema but they don't get in the way of 'business as usual' functionality.

My memory of the database wars is that one advantage of a Codd relational database like DB2 over a Bachmann network database like IDS was the relative ease of adding new entities to the schema. But I still think in terms of network structures
