Timothy Zahn's stuff can be quite good --- really enjoyed his Blackcollar and Cobra books.
Of especial note is his _Icarus Hunt_ which was supposed to be a Star Wars Han Solo/Chewbacca novel, but when it couldn't be sold was re-worked as a stand-alone.
