Read this back in the day (1990, still have my battered paperback copy on my shelf) and thoroughly recommend it. Stoll does an excellent job of explaining how he (an astronomer) ended up becoming a systems administrator, what drew his attention to the hacker in the first place, and gives a detailed, engaging account of how he tracked the hacker from California to Germany through an Internet very different from what we're familiar with today.
