A custom font can be put into the fonts folder (check spelling and allowable types). No hacking needed.

You can change the CSS in an ebook in Calibre to have different margins. Setting an explicit line spacing is usually a bad idea, but also possible in CSS. Only early Kindles had a file you could edit to change the margin.
