No amount of fiddling with the power button will power off a kindle.

Oases 2 and 3 and PW4 are able to hibernate, which is almost the same a power off. If all kindles could do that, almost all the need to power down a kindle would go away.

That amazon dialog is poorly worded.
e-ink screens only use power when changing. A sleep screen image uses no more power than a blank screen.
Kindles
are computers doing stuff in the back ground.
There are at least two different pieces of evidence that kindles do not power power down except under unusual conditions.
1. Kindles take a long time to boot. That doesn't happen after using a mumbo jumbo method to power a kindle off.
2. People have examined system logs after waking a kindle after a mumbo jumbo power of method and they are no different from those of a normal wake from sleep.
