Read that you have to download the correct old software from Amazon to my pc.
Then drag it to the kindle to install.
Once its working ok then I try sending books to it. ...

I use Linux and have never installed the Kindle PC software. I use two methods to download the books for Calibre. Mostly I just download the book(s) to the Kindle device (a black Kindle "no touch") and read the book into Calibre via a USB cable.
But, when I don't have the Kindle with me, I just download to Linux computer for USB transfer. In my case I use tell Amazon that this download is for the Kindle "No Touch" because I have newer Kindles and I want to make sure I get the AZW3 format. (If you will only have one Kindle device, this won't be necessary.)
Either way works without any special software (just Calibre and DeDRM utilities — I use pre-5.x Calibre for now). I usually download to the Kindle "no touch" because I — more or less — use that device as my Kindle backup. (I don't have thousands and thousands of books.)
