I'm not sure how you would do this with windows or linux, but I suspect a similar set up would work.
I had no problem connecting to Calibre 5.1 with the current version of Calibre Companion for iOS and downloading the book, both as a wireless device and content server.

On Windows, install 4.23 portable alongside a 64-bit install of 5.1. Then you can copy your setting to the portable settings That's what I did except I have 5.1 as portable.
