I have a Kindle Touch, 4th generation, announced in 2011, and its display is still fine. Every so often I forget for several months (or years) to charge it and it takes at least a day for it to wake up and start charging so running the battery down doesn't seem to be something that affects the display.

A large fraction of the first batch of K2 (late winter early spring 2009) would fade immediately when exposed to sunlight. amazon and e-ink never said what the cause was, but they fixed it.
