I won't repeat myself in details, but the gist of it is that a disappearing icon breaks the UX contract of the rest of the options, so, hard nope ;p.

As a shitty comparison: the Wi-Fi tile/icon on your phone doesn't disappear when it's off.

The only halfway viable option I can see is the airplane icon, which would work, but I find utterly it stupid. Then again, the status bar is hidden 99.942% of the time on my end, so I'm in the same boat as @pazos, and as this doesn't break UX, I'd be fine with it.
