A patch is theoretically possible, but too much work to be worth it. A NickelHook mod is less work and would be relatively straightforward, but I don't consider this to be enough of an issue to warrant creating one.

For the .zip suffix, note that you can extract the zip, and it'll work fine (even the file sizes in the settings). If it conflicts with an existing .zip, the .zip will take priority. This isn't officially used right now, so I wouldn't count on it staying around.
