Older model Kindles maintained their Amazon content if the device was deregistered. Newer models no longer do that. You could deregister from one account, keep those books, then register to another account, and download those books. When "Family Sharing" was added, the behavior on a deregister changed so that Amazon content was removed from the Kindle when it was deregistered.

Fire tablets have always lost all Amazon content when deregistered.
