As for the OPs issue, He does not mention what his original SMTP host was. I suspect that "I cannot sign up to GMX as it isn't available in all countries." is a pretty strong suggestion that he does not have a GMX account, so configuring his GMX account to allow POP/IMAP/SMTP is not a viable suggestion.

As for the error 10054, that suggests that either his network connection is being blocked by his firewall or antivirus or he is connecting to an IP address that does not have an SMTP server.
