I was also shocked myself after tryging to upgrade from v4.18 to v5.0.1 when I got the threatening message which I could read nearly as:
"You been a bad boy will be now punished while refusing to upgrade to the newest spy-W10-system therefore you will not get any updates anymore !"
.... on my main NB running W7 -64bit.
So since I own several other NBs myself and on one of my non-production secondary NB i installed W10 already before just to see and test this piece of CRAP... (found out soon it is totaly uncomfortable to work on W10) and lately I converted the installation to W10 LTSC with openshell classic menue.. which makes W10 feel and work to 97% as the good old W7 for me....
So instead of complaining about the unclever decision of Kovid to banish and punish W7 users.. I installed latest calibre 5.01. on the secondary Notebook running W10 LTSC... than copied the installation folder to my primary W7-64bit Notebook, named it calibre5.. and woalla.. calibre seems to work so far flawlesly for me....
We can probably complain to Kovid about his unclever decision banishing W7 only as much we are paying him for his unique SW and for fixing all problems and developing new features in same time... :-)
