Probably because you don't run in "debug mode". The exceptions show up there during startup. They don't stop calibre from starting.

If you want to try it, put the 1.4 version of the plugin into calibre 5's configuration directory then start calibre in debug mode. You will get the exception trace shown a few posts ago.
