@draw2much - on Windows, if you have set a Default Program for .cbz files (e.g. I have Honeyview), and you have the CBZ box unchecked in the Preferences->Behaviour->Use viewer for: list, calibre will view CBZs with the Default Program set in Windows.

In principle, this should work for all file types on all platforms.

I use the built-in Open with tool to open format files with an 'abnormal' program. Example: I have the WinRAR archive utility in the built Open with list for CBZs and Sigil for EPUBs. I use shortcuts for some (e.g. Sigil has Shift+S) otherwise I use the View specific format tool (Alt+V).

Added: I like the Honeyview comic viewer because that's all it does, i.e. no bells, and no whistles
