As mysteriously as it arose the problem has disappeared. I didn't even delete and reinstall KOReader as I had a few times before, just restarted the kindle again (which I had done several times after the latest install just in case). Ironically, after several months not having to choose which button to press, I'm think I'm going to set the option to last file.
