Okay, I just tried creating a Favorite Authors user category. On a test library of 962 entries, @Favorite Authors:true returned 97/962 and @Favorite Authors:false returned 865/962 entries. Looks like spaces in User Category names works fine on my install of Calibre Portable 4.23 (32-bit).

Note, I'm just using the native implementation and haven't tried installing the plugin version. As far as I know, support for User Categories has been built-in to Calibre since at least 3.15 (last version of Calibre I used before that was 0.9.x, iirc ) and it's not something I bothered looking into until recently.
