I don’t think turning up the front light increases (physical) contrast, so much as makes it easier for eyes to focus. Even if you have good visual acuity, if iris is opened up to max it makes focus more difficult.

I think it would be interesting to measure the physical contrast at various light levels and see if it ‘actually’ changes that much. Of course, in the end, contrast perception is subjective (generated by brain).
