It's probably a book-specific problem.
The general problem with fast-page-turns is that it prioritizes speed over loading time. Since each chapter is normally in a separate file within the zip archive that is the ePub container, rather than wait for the next chapter to load, it just skips pages (usually only one) to keep moving ahead. But that one page it skips is the FIRST in each new chapter, and that makes the feature pretty damn useless, as you can't easily watch for chapter numbers, chapter titles, chapter epigraphs, etc., as the display of them is usually suppressed.
