But, I don't understand the state it is in. If you can get to a point where the device is telling you the firmware version, then it is running. And "card now appears to be empty" again makes me think it is running and for some reason not importing books. And how did thing "went off plan during a factory reset"?

Have you just tried doing the factory reset again? That is probably all that is needed. Or if it did the setup, then sign out of the account and do the setup again.
