You keep saying the "box" won't appear, but what DOES appear? I mean, you should see a web page, and under the top border with the battery status, then a line that says "Advanced Mode" among other things, and below that a box for URLs and a button like Reload, Google, etc.
If you're lost, hit Menu, go to Bookmarks, and then select a Bookmark to load that page. Then after that, you can try hitting Menu again and then "Enter URL" and see if that works for you.
